FPAC Statement on the Canada–EU Summit
A stronger Canada-EU partnership can strengthen reliable trade
Ottawa, ON — Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) welcomes progress made to develop a closer Canada-EU relationship, including the establishment of the Canadian Industry Office in Brussels.
A deeper Canada–EU partnership can strengthen reliable trade while advancing shared environmental goals. For Canada’s forest sector, that also means finding a durable resolution to the outstanding challenges posed by the European Union Deforestation-free Product Regulation (EUDR). We support the Government of Canada’s efforts to work with EU partners to seek an evidence-based approach that supports the fight against global deforestation without creating unnecessary barriers for sustainably produced Canadian wood, pulp and paper.
“Canada and Europe share a commitment to resilient and well-managed forests, addressing the affordability crisis, and respecting rules-based trade. We are pleased to see a stronger partnership between our regions as we turn those shared values into practical results for the employees, communities, and businesses that depend on a strong Canadian forest sector,” said Derek Nighbor, FPAC President and CEO.
FPAC will continue to work with Canadian officials, EU decision makers, and local and international partners to advance solutions that support sustainable supply chains and a stronger Canada–EU trading relationship.
