Final blog photos of my trip to the Yukon!

This summer, I had the privilege of working in Human Resources. Coming home from university, I couldn’t wait to start and was curious as to what my responsibilities would be. I assumed that my job would consist of setting up interviews and conflict resolution. And while that might be some of what I experienced; it was just a small fraction of what I actually did. The majority of the Summer I spent working on two main projects. The first one was revamping our mill’s internal website, TNet. I spent time fiddling around with the site, looking for ways to make it more efficient to navigate. I am proud to say that the site now looks awesome!

Beaver dams, steep slopes, access routes, and places to land a helicopter during layout are other elements we may be looking for during this process. While data and imagery are available to help plan the blocks, seeing it from the sky can often provide a much clearer and more current picture of the forest.

I wanted to use this blog to reflect on my summer and share some of my experiences. As you all know, this summer I worked at Alberta Newsprint Company, however, one thing I did not tell you in the beginning is the many different departments I worked in! So here is a fun little timeline from my summer:

For me, the forest is important and we must take care of it. We want the trees to regenerate, it's like a garden that is always being cultivated. My hobbies are in the forest; I fish, hunt, walk and ride my motorbike, I really enjoy going to the forest! I've had a cottage for six years and my family and I enjoy it a lot, so it's also important to preserve it.

Summer is already coming to an end. It's getting darker, beach days are becoming less frequent and the nights are getting cooler. There is no doubt that the start of the 2022 school year is approaching. Back to school means goodbye to the full-time internship and my experience with the Forest Products Association of Canada as a dream intern.

Transportation in the backcountry can be challenging even in the best circumstances. A sudden rainfall can make an easy drive in become a hard drive out.

I really can’t believe how fast the summer has flown by. With that in mind, I am sad to say that this will probably be the last blog post of my “Green Dream” summer; and what a summer it was! From tree plant to site-prep and everything in between, I am really lucky to have worked with some great people, learned some valuable lessons, stayed COVID-safe, and had a great time!

The forest sector is very important to the successful economy in many small towns like Whitecourt. Having an industry like this here has provided us with countless opportunities and helped us become the town we are today. Many of the infrastructure put in place may not have been possible without the support of these large corporations.

I was born here. I'm a guy who is rooted in my region, there was never any question of leaving it. I found the job I was looking for in my area. I applied to other factories, but I almost hoped I wouldn't be chosen because I didn't want to leave my part of the world.
