Announcement Will Support Market Opportunities for Canadian Wood
Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and the Canadian Wood Council (CWC) applaud the announcement of WOODRISE Alliance, a new international body dedicated to the development and promotion of tall wood buildings.
This morning, at the inaugural WOODRISE 2017 World Congress in Bordeaux, France, six internationally renowned Research and Innovation Centres joined forces to ensure that wood can support lower-carbon buildings and be a solutions provider as we transition to a lower-carbon global economy.
Canada’s FPInnovations joins organizations from Brazil, Finland, France and Switzerland as part of this ground-breaking initiative.
“Canada is a world-leader in how we sustainably manage our forests and in our experience and expertise when it comes to building with wood,” said FPAC CEO Derek Nighbor. “Today’s announcement further demonstrates Canada’s leadership role in the fight against climate change and the opportunity to expand the use of Canadian wood and Canadian know-how in the construction of tall wood buildings here at home and around the world,” he added.
“The Canadian Wood Council (CWC) applauds the coming together of research organizations from these countries in the WOODRISE Alliance,” says Helen Griffin, VP, Codes & Engineering at the CWC. “This Alliance strengthens the cooperation between research groups and supports the understanding that wood products are safe, strong, sophisticated, and a solution to climate change and urban densification problems.”
FPAC provides a voice for Canada’s wood, pulp, and paper producers nationally and internationally in government, trade, and environmental affairs. The $65-billion-a-year forest products industry represents 2 per cent of Canada’s GDP and is one of Canada’s largest employers operating in over 600 communities, providing 230,000 direct jobs, and 1 million indirect jobs across the country. The forest products sector is a world leader in sustainable forest management; we are a critical partner in the fight against climate change and have invested 1.5 billion dollars in clean technology in the last five years.
