Rail Monopoly Costs Forest Products Industry $280 Million Per Year

Avrim Lazar, President and CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) will address the Senate Committee on Transport and Communications today as part of its study of Bill C-11, An Act to amend the Canada Transportation Act and the Railway Safety Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.  He will call for an increase in competition within the railway freight system and new measures to provide shippers with the means to challenge unreasonable costs imposed by the railways.

Forest Products Industry Puts Government on Notice; Calls for Early Action on Climate Change

Avrim Lazar, President and CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) will address the Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources today as part of its study of Bill C-288, An Act to ensure Canada meets its global climate change obligations under the Kyoto Protocol. He will call on the government to use 1990 as its base year for calculation of emissions reductions because anything less sends a message to good corporate citizens that environmental responsibility is not recognized and is indeed penalized by making it more advantageous to wait for regulation.

Forest Products Industry’s Experience Supports IPCC’s Wake-up Call

The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) today responded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s report, Climate Change 2007: Impact, Adaptation and Vulnerability, by urging more rapid action on the part of all industry sectors and governments to address the impact that climate change is already having on Canada’s ecosystems.

Forest Products Industry Applauds Federal Government Action on Mountain Pine Beetle

The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) today commended the Government of Canada on the announcement of measures to combat the spread of mountain pine beetle as it tracks eastward across Canada. The $25 million fund will assist in activities related to salvaging of infested trees, removal of pine forests suitable for beetle infestation and breeding and the completion of geographic maps to better target the beetle spread threat.
