SIGNATORIES TO THE CANADIAN BOREAL FOREST AGREEMENT WELCOME THE NEW ONTARIO CABINET

October 20 2011, OTTAWA

The Signatories of the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement (CBFA) offer their congratulations to Premier McGuinty on the appointment of the new Ontario cabinet today, and commit to playing a positive role as the new government addresses the challenges and opportunities of sustainable economic development, particularly in Northern Ontario.

“This new government has an exciting opportunity to develop policies that will allow Ontarians to benefit from the promise of the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement,” said Andrew Bevan, Executive Director of the CBFA Secretariat.

“We can move past the old jobs versus environment argument,” said Avrim Lazar, President and CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada. “By partnering with environmental and Aboriginal groups, the CBFA gives us a pragmatic problem-solving approach that will allow us to realize the vision of greener jobs in a healthy forest industry.”

“The CBFA presents a fair and innovative pathway to solving outstanding resource, jobs, forest conservation and species at risk issues that are before this government,” said Janet Sumner, Executive Director CPAWS-Wildlands League.  “We look forward to working with the new Ministers to implement these solutions.

“We very much appreciate and acknowledge the mention of CBFA, as a potential group where solutions can be found, from Minister Gravelle in his recent remarks in the north,” added Andrew Bevan. “We hope to build on our work with the government from the last year.”
