FPAC Welcomes Conifex as Newest Member
July 27 2011, OTTAWA
The Chairman of the Board of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC), Jim Lopez, today announced that Conifex Timber Inc. has become the newest member of FPAC. The Association is the voice of Canada’s wood, pulp and paper producers nationally and internationally in government, trade and environmental affairs.
“We are pleased to have such a progressive Canadian forest company join our ranks”, said Lopez. “Conifex is a fine example of why Canada’s forest industry is considered to have world-leading environmental credentials.”
Conifex is a publicly listed softwood forest products company operating mills in Fort St. James and Mackenzie in the Northern Interior region of British Columbia. The company operations are conducted in a sustainable, safe and an environmentally sound manner and include timber harvesting, reforestation, sawmilling and lumber finishing. The products are sold in the United States, Chinese, Canadian and Japanese markets.
”Conifex is a welcome addition to our Association,” said Avrim Lazar, President and CEO of FPAC. “The company is committed to meeting the high environmental standards that Canada’s forest products industry is known for globally. And I’m also pleased that Conifex is embracing clean energy, and as such is helping the forest sector contribute to the new bio-economy. “
The Conifex bio-energy initiatives are aimed at generating clean renewable energy as well as reducing greenhouse gases through carbon sequestration and increasing and stabilizing the employment base in northern British Columbia.
“FPAC is known for being a strong and effective voice for the forest products industry,” said Ken Shields, Chairman and CEO of Conifex Timber Inc. “We are pleased to join FPAC and eager to work as an Association member to advance the social, economic and environmental contributions made by Canada’s forest products industry especially in the area of innovation.”
FPAC now represents 22 forest product companies operating in Canada. Member companies are committed to the five principles of progressive forest management― harvest legally, regenerate promptly, reduce waste and promote recovery and recycling, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and welcome independent scrutiny. All FPAC members are signatories of the landmark Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement.
