Forest Products Industry Supports Legislation to Extend Employment Insurance Benefits to Long-Tenure

October 20 2009, OTTAWA, Ontario

“The forest products industry applauds the government’s proposed legislation as it will provide hundreds of workers in our industry with the financial support they need during this time of deep economic uncertainty,” said Andrew Casey. “The recession has unfortunately taken a significant toll on the forest products industry, with the loss of more than 50,000 jobs over the past two years. This new legislation is a positive step for forest communities and families that depend on the industry.”

Bill C-50 would provide up to 20 weeks of additional EI benefits to unemployed long-tenured workers.  The start date of the program would be linked to the coming into force of the Bill, and payments of the extended benefits would continue until the fall of 2010. “The industry is thankful that the government understands the need to implement additional employment insurance benefits for workers and communities hardest hit by this recession,” said Casey.
